Ex-Real Madrid star pours cold water on mischievous reports claiming he's open to coaching Super Eagles
Published: June 27, 2024Former Real Madrid star and La Liga ambassador, Mutiu Adepoju has moved quickly to dismiss mischievous reports of him interested in coaching the Super Eagles.
The Nigeria coaching job is vacant at the moment following the resignation of Finidi George in the aftermath of the Super Eagles' disappointing results in the June internationals against South Africa's Bafana Bafana and Republic of Benin's Cheetahs.
Before Finidi's resignation, the Nigeria Football Federation revealed that a foreign coach would be appointed for the Super Eagles before the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Allnigeriasoccer.com has listened to the podcast in which Adepoju was interviewed and can one hundred percent confirm that the Nigeria legend was not questioned about managing the Super Eagles, indicating the quotes were made up.
Adepoju is the holder of the prestigious UEFA Pro License, a qualification that enables him to coach top tier European clubs and national teams.
The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner was once General Manager of his boyhood club Shooting Stars and also coached the Ibadan-based team on a temporary basis.
Speaking to Nigeria Info FM Abuja, Adepoju set the record straight, stating: "I don't know where this is coming from. I never applied for the Super Eagles coaching job in any moment.
"I had a podcast ten days to two weeks ago with Managing Madrid podcast in which we spoke about Real Madrid, my time with Real Madrid, when I was playing in La Liga, and nothing came in talking about the Super Eagles job".
When asked if he has interest in coaching any of Nigeria's national teams, Adepoju answered: "I don't want to do that at this moment."
Adepoju was arguably the standout player in the Flying Eagles squad that reached the final of the 1989 Fifa U20 World Cup, before earning promotion to the Super Eagles.
