Sunday Oliseh names Boniface among the two best Super Eagles players in no-holds-barred interview
Published: July 02, 2024In a no-holds-barred interview with Elegebete TV Sports, Nigeria legend Sunday Oliseh bared his mind on a variety of issues, including his ongoing feud with former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, his time with the national team, the resignation of Finidi George as coach of the Super Eagles and touched on two current Super Eagles players.
Oliseh, who served Nigeria for ten years including three as captain, has named Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman and Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface as the two best players in the current Super Eagles squad.
Although William Troost-Ekong was named the Player of the Tournament, Lookman was arguably the standout player for the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he directly participated in four goals (3 goals, 1 assist).
The former England youth international netted a brilliant hat-trick to help Atalanta win the Europa League in May.
Boniface, sidelined from the AFCON due to a training camp injury, was awarded the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season following an exceptional season where he netted 14 goals and provided nine assists in 23 league games.
Oliseh waxed lyrical about Boniface, highlighting that the Real Sapphire product is a complete forward.
"Coming to the Super Eagles there's something I would like to add. There are two players that we have now in my opinion are the best players we have at the moment, looking at the past season," Oliseh stated.
"I'm looking at Lookman and one that might surprise you and I find him extraordinarily good. His name is Victor Boniface.
"I watch this guy every week because he's playing just 45 minutes drive from my house at Leverkusen, so I had opportunity to watch him play so many times.
"He's a player who can do it all. He's a player that can play with his back to goal, he's a player one on one you are in trouble, he's a player that has pace, he is aerially strong and he carries the team with him.
"If he's injured often, it is because the Bundesliga is one of the demanding leagues in the world, physically not only technically.
"When I see players like that, it makes me optimistic for the Super Eagles because you can build teams around those players."
Boniface and Lookman participated in Nigeria's last international against Republic of Benin but failed to get on the scoresheet in a disappointing 2-1 loss.
