'It's not in vain' - Promising goalkeeper thanks Nigerian parents after signing new Arsenal deal

Promising goalkeeper Brian Okonkwo has thanked his Nigerian parents and elder brother Arthur Okonkwo after putting pen to paper on his first professional contract with Arsenal.

The Hale End Academy graduate joined the Gunners at the age of ten following a successful trial arranged by an Arsenal scout who worked at his former Sunday team, Pro Touch.

Brian has decided to extend his stay at Arsenal despite his brother Arthur Okonkwo ending his fourteen-year association with the Emirates Stadium outfit by moving to League One new boys Wrexham on a permanent deal at the start of this month.

The goalkeeping brothers are eligible to represent the Super Eagles through their mom and dad, who is originally from Anambra State, South-eastern Nigeria.

Last season, Brian Okonkwo made his debut in the Premier League 2 and went on to play two more matches before the season ended, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win at Liverpool.

Commenting on his new deal, Okonkwo told Arsenal's official webpage: "My parents have worked really hard and I’m really happy that it’s not in vain.

"My brother was also in the club and has pushed me forward, as well as the coaches."

The 18-year-old Brian Okonkwo has gained first team experience through loan spells at non-league sides Hitchin Town, Leatherhead and Cheshunt.
