Bayern new boy Olise named in France squad for Olympics, Chelsea midfielder Ugochukwu alternate list
Published: July 08, 2024France U23 coach Thierry Henry has announced his squad list for the 2024 Olympic Games, with two Super Eagles-eligible players in contention to represent the 1984 champions.
The Arsenal legend has named two goalkeepers, six defenders, five midfielders and five attackers to the 18-player roster, while one goalkeeper, a defender and two midfielders have been named on the alternate list.
Fresh from completing his transfer to Bayern Munich, former Crystal Palace star and 2021 Super Eagles invitee Michael Olise has been named in the main squad, while Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu is on standby.
The International Olympic Committee has changed its rules ahead of the start of the 2024 Games.
In the event of injury of one of the eighteen players, a reserve may be used while the injured player will join the reserve group before, potentially, making his return to the team.
Ugochukwu and Olise participated in France's 4-1 rout of Paraguay in a friendly staged at Jean-Dauger Stadium on July 4.
The Blues are set to play two more friendly matches, against the Dominican Republic on Thursday, July 11, and against Japan on Wednesday, July 17 at the Mayol Stadium in Toulon.
France will face the United States, Guinea and New Zealand in Group A of the 2024 Olympic Games.
