Okoye wants to displace Nwabali as Super Eagles no. 1; speaks on Osimhen's transfer imbroglio
Published: July 23, 2024Speaking in a recent interview, Maduka Okoye spoke about Victor Osimhen's transfer imbroglio and also expressed his intention to displace Stanley Nwabali as Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper.
It is no news that Paris Saint-Germain are interested in grabbing Osimhen's signature and the lanky striker is also keen on joining the club, having made up his mind to leave Napoli this summer.
However, talks are at a stalemate between the Parisians and the Parthenopeans and there is a high possibility that the 25-year-old will not get to play for the Ligue 1 defending champions next season.
During his interview with Tuttomercatoweb, Okoye was asked about Osimhen's transfer predicament but didn't give much away despite revealing that he spoke to the latter recently.
"Yes, we know each other very well, we talk every now and then, I spoke to him two weeks ago. PSG? I can't talk about it (laughs). I clearly wish him the best, he will choose and find his way".
The Udinese shot stopper was also quizzed about wanting to play for the Super Eagles and didn't hide his intentions in his response, which indicated that he is ready to displace Nwabali as first choice shot stopper.
"Obviously I would like to wear the national team jersey again."
The 24-year-old is back in the Super Eagles fold after almost a year in international wilderness and was named in the matchday squad against South Africa and Republic of Benin in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers last month.
He is currently playing second fiddle to Nwabali who impressed in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.
