'That he will leave is certain' - Dutch football expert on the future of Nottingham Forest-linked striker Akpom
Published: July 24, 2024Dutch football expert and Voetbal International journalist Tim van Duijn is confident that Chuba Akpom will depart Ajax Amsterdam next month amid reports linking the striker with a transfer to Nottingham Forest.
The two-time European champions have reignited their interest in the Super Eagles hopeful after a deal fell through in the January transfer window.
The Hale End Academy product joined Ajax last summer from Championship outfit Middlesbrough in exchange for €12.3 million.
Akpom is angling for a move away from Ajax due to a lack of adequate game time in his first season with the Amsterdam club.
A transfer is unlikely to happen this month because Ajax need the Nigerian forward for their Europa League second qualifying round tie against Vojvodina.
Burnley's Netherlands international Wout Weghorst has prioritized a transfer to Ajax this summer
Should Akpom remain at Ajax, he could drop to number three in the pecking order of strikers, behind Brian Brobbey and Weghorst.
In quotes relayed by FC Update, Tim van Duijn said: "He (Akpom) absolutely cannot leave for these two games, he has to play them. After that, Ajax will cooperate in a departure. That he will leave is certain."
Akpom scored fifteen goals and provided three assists in 36 games in his first season at Ajax Amsterdam, to whom he is contracted until June 30, 2028.
