Showdown in Bordeaux: Brazil coach shares six things that have impressed him about Super Falcons team
Published: July 25, 2024Speaking ahead of his side's 2024 Olympic Games Group C match with Nigeria at Stade Matmut-Atlantique (Bordeaux), Brazil coach Arthur Elias shared six things that make the Super Falcons a difficult team to play against.
The South American giants are eager to make a strong impression at the Olympic Games, after they were eliminated in the group stage of the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup.
On the other hand, Randy Waldrum's team earned plaudits for their defensive solidity during last year's tournament in Australia and New Zealand, keeping clean sheets in three of the four matches they participated in.
And in attack, the African powerhouse have players who can change a match in a moment, including ex-Barcelona star Asisat Oshoala, Jennifer Echegini, Rasheedat Ajibade and Uchenna Kanu.
Arthur Elias highlighted that the Super Falcons have players with physical strength and great speed, adding that they are strong in set pieces and counterattacks and have players who are in good form for top European clubs.
In quotes relayed by the official website of the Brazlian Federation, Elias said: "It is important that our objectives have been achieved so far and that we have managed to consolidate our game model.
"Nigeria is a physical team, with players with great speed and a very good transition, they exploit the aerial ball well, with players who are in good form at their clubs."
Arthur Elias also highlighted the quality of the Nigerian defence, marshaled by experienced centre-back Ohale Osinachi.
"We have analyzed many of Nigeria’s games over the last year and a half. They are a team that concedes few goals.
"So much so that in last year’s World Cup, they were only eliminated in the knockout stages, and on penalties, after a 0-0 draw with England, who were runners-up.”
