'Truly unforgettable' - Super Falcons midfielder Abiodun honoured to chat with queen of football Marta

Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun shared her cherished moments on the pitch with Brazilian legend Marta after Nigeria's defeat in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Dubbed the queen of football by the Confederation of Brazilian Football, Marta could have equaled the all-time Olympic Games highest goalscoring record held by Cristiane if her first half goal against the Super Falcons was not ruled out for offside in the buildup.

Nigeria lost 1-0 to Brazil in their opening encounter, with Gabi Nunes scoring the decisive goal, assisted by Marta.

Abiodun, who played the entire match in a midfield trio alongside Christy Ucheibe and Toni Payne, reflected on her interaction with Marta on social media platform X.

She acknowledged the legendary Brazilian's legacy in football, which has inspired countless players across generations.

"A moment to remember! Last night, I had the honor of chatting with the one and only @martavieiras10 whose legacy has inspired generations," Abiodun posted.

"Sharing wisdom, experiences, and smiles with such an icon is truly unforgettable. Here's to chasing dreams and making history!"

Born in Ibadan, Abiodun made her Fifa Women's World Cup debut for Nigeria against Canada in 2019, although her appearance was cut short by a red card during stoppage time after a VAR review.

Despite this setback, the former Rivers Angels midfielder has been a key player for the Super Falcons, making three appearances for the national team, including her current participation in the Olympics.

With the defeat, Nigeria is at the bottom of Group C with zero points, while Spain and Brazil hold the first and second positions, and Japan is in third place, also with zero points.

The Super Falcons are set to return to action on Sunday, July 28, 2024, against Spain at 6 pm, aiming to turn their fortunes around in the tournament.
