Right winger or number 10: Mikel reveals the position Chelsea star Cole Palmer is best at
Published: August 21, 2024Former Nigeria international John Obi Mikel has revealed Chelsea star Cole Palmer's best position between the right wing and the number 10 role.
The England international can play as an attacking midfielder, right winger and can also play as a striker but is traditionally an attacking midfielder.
Since his move to Stamford Bridge last summer, the 22-year-old has played in these three positions but has featured majorly as an attacking midfielder and right winger.
Regardless of where he has been played, Palmer has been heads and shoulders above his Chelsea teammates and was the shining light for the team last season.
He registered 22 goals and 11 assists last term and was named the Premier League Young Player of the Season, PFA Fans' Player of the Year and more recently PFA Young Player of the Year.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast after Chelsea's loss to Manchester City in the Premier League opening fixture for the Blues, Mikel has revealed the Manchester City Academy product's best position.
"You have to make room for Enzo Fernández, keep playing Fernández and Moisés Caicedo. I think these two will eventually gell and start playing well.
"And Cole Palmer should not be on the wide right. He should not be frozen out on the wing, that's not where he's best at.
"His position is number 10. He should be in the middle of the pitch. Sometimes a part of the game I looked at him he was kind of lost. He needs to be where the action is, he needs to be in the middle where he touches the ball a lot.
"Players like that need to feel the ball because if they don't they get fizzled out of the game so he needs to come back and play in his favorite position, number 10.
"We have signed Pedro Neto, give him a chance, let him play on that right wing and get Cole Palmer in the middle."
Palmer played as a right winger against the Citizens with Enzo Maresca preferring to play Argentine midfielder Enzo
Fernández in the number 10 role.
Admittedly, the talented midfielder failed to impress against his former employers just like most of his colleagues and it will be interesting how Maresca deploys him for the rest of the season.
