African brothers at war: Mikel namechecks Didier Drogba in his response to Chelsea striker Jackson
Published: August 26, 2024John Obi Mikel has responded to Nicolas Jackson's attack on him after he scored in Chelsea's 6-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on matchday two of the Premier League, played on Sunday at the Molineux.
After opening his goalscoring account for the season, the Senegalese took to his social media account to call out the former Chelsea midfielder.
His reaction has been one of the talking points on social media in the last 24 hours, with some leaping to the defence of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner while others have taken sides with Jackson.
Mikel has been one of the critics of the Senegal international and has always been of the opinion that Chelsea needed a better striker and has continuously urged Chelsea to sign Victor Osimhen.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Obi One Podcast, the retired midfielder namechecked his former Chelsea teammate Didier Drogba as he reacted to Jackson's comments on social media and added that that he would love to see the Lions of Teranga star succeed at Stamford Bridge.
“He is from Africa, I am from Africa, you know what I mean. I know he mentioned Africa, and I have represented Africa and helped African football in terms of playing in the Africa Cup of Nations four or five times," Mikel said.
"I won the African Cup of Nations and for me, I would like to see my African brother like he said do well in the Premier League, come to Chelsea, a big club, a massive club, where you know we have had one of the greatest strikers in Didier Drogba from Africa, Ivory Coast, did really well. I would like to see him do well as well.
"If he plays well, I will praise him! If there is something to be said about him, where he needs to improve, I will definitely say it, and you know if he scores every week and tells me to shut up, I'll take it."
Jackson joined Chelsea last summer from Villarreal and has cut a divisive figure due to his inconsistency in front of goal, scoring 18 goals in 46 games across all competitions for the Blues.
Given his inconsistency, Chelsea are looking to bring in a striker ahead of the close of this summer's transfer window, with Osimhen listed among their targets.
