'Playing against Rohr' - Ekong unfazed by the prospect of facing Benin team coached by ex-Nigeria boss
Published: September 04, 2024Super Eagles captain for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations fixtures in September, William Troost-Ekong remains undeterred by the prospect of facing former coach Gernot Rohr when Nigeria host Republic of Benin at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Saturday.
Troost-Ekong, who will come up against Rohr for the first time since the German tactician's departure from the Nigerian senior men’s national team in 2021, is focused on securing a win.
Rohr managed the Super Eagles from 2016 to 2021, and his familiarity with the team adds an intriguing layer to the upcoming fixture.
Speaking at Wednesday's media parley, Troost-Ekong emphasized the role of the players in achieving victory.
"I think it is our job. The coach adds to the team and organize the team but the responsibility is the players," Troost-Ekong stated.
Despite Rohr's intimate knowledge of the Super Eagles' tactics and players, Troost-Ekong expressed confidence in Nigeria's preparation for the match.
“We're ready for the game, playing against Gernot Rohr, a coach that knows us very well, was with us up to five years but we'll be ready for the game," Troost-Ekong added.
Nigeria will be looking to bounce back from their previous 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic in June, a loss that also contributed to the resignation of former coach Finidi George.
Under the interim management of Austin Eguavoen, the Super Eagles will be eager to reverse their fortunes and secure a decisive victory in Uyo.
