Last but not least: Osimhen reports for Super Eagles duty in Uyo after sealing loan move to Galatasaray
Published: September 05, 2024
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is the last player to report for international duty in Uyo ahead of Nigeria’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Benin Republic.
The Napoli-owned forward joined his teammates on Thursday and was greeted with smiles and laughter from team officials.
Osimhen was reportedly allowed to arrive later than the rest of the squad as he needed to finalize his season-long loan move to Galatasaray, following a turbulent summer transfer window.
He was linked with potential moves to PSG, Chelsea, and Al Ahli, but none materialized before the transfer window closed in the top five European leagues on Friday, August 30.
Upon his arrival, the 25-year-old is set to join the rest of the Super Eagles squad in their preparation for the crucial encounter against Republic of Benin in Uyo.
The team, under interim manager Austin Eguavoen, began their preparations for the match on Tuesday, September 3.
Osimhen's return is expected to be a major boost, as the Super Eagles aim to improve on their recent run of form, having only won one of their last four matches without him.
Osimhen has not featured for Nigeria since leading the team to the 2023 AFCON final against Ivory Coast in Abidjan.
He missed two friendly matches against Ghana and Mali in March and was also absent during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic in June.
The Super Eagles will face Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium followed by a match against Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium on Tuesday, September 10, at 2 p.m.
