Intercontinental Derby: Osimhen registers back-to-back assists for the first time since September 2019
Published: September 21, 2024Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen played a pivotal role in Galatasaray's 3-1 victory over Fenerbahçe in the Intercontinental Derby on Saturday evening.
Trusted to lead the attack ahead of Mauro Icardi and Michy Batshuayi, Osimhen combined effectively with former Napoli teammate Dries Mertens in the build up to the second goal.
Galatasaray took the lead in the 20th minute courtesy of an own goal by Dominik Livakovic.
Eight minutes later, Osimhen skillfully laid the ball down with his chest in the box, allowing Mertens to tap it past Livakovic for the second goal.
Heading into halftime, Galatasaray held to the two-goal advantage despite Fenerbahçe's attempts to respond.
The visitors began the second half strong, extending their lead in the 59th minute when Gabriel Sara scored from an assist by Lucas Torreira.
Fenerbahçe managed to reduce the deficit with a penalty from Edwin Dzeko in the 63rd minute.
However, Osimhen and his teammates maintained their composure to secure the win.
Since joining Galatasaray on loan from Napoli, Osimhen has already notched two assists in his first two matches, including one in the 5-0 victory over Rizespor.
This is the first time the reigning African Footballer of the Year has provided an assist in back-to-back games since September 2019 during his time with Lille in France.
The team will face PAOK in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, where Osimhen will aim to score his first goal for the club.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles fullback, Bright Osayi-Samuel was missing in action for Fenerbahce as he is yet to fully recover from an injury.
