PL2: Olusesi on target as Arsenal throw away two-goal lead to lose 5-2 to Tottenham Hotspur
Published: October 05, 2024Arsenal threw away a two-goal lead to lose 5-2 to Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League 2 clash at Meadow Park on Saturday afternoon, with Anglo-Nigerian midfielder Callum Olusesi among the scorers for the visitors.
On Friday, Olusesi was named in the England U18 squad for the first time ahead of their internationals in October against Sweden and either the Netherlands or Ukraine in Marbella.
Josh Nichols and Andre Annous were named in the Gunners matchday squad, while Olusesi and Damola Ajayi started for Tottenham Hotspur.
Two other academy players of Nigerian descent Nathan Butler-Oyedeji and Ethan Nwaneri are on first team duties, having been named in the gameday squad for the visit of Southampton in the Premier League, so were not available for selection.
Romari Forde headed in at the back post to give the Gunners the lead in the 17th minute and the advantage was doubled by Michal Rosiak in the 35th minute as the home team went into the break 2-0 up.
In a game of two halves, the Lilywhites dominated the second half, cancelling the deficit inside five minutes before going ahead to win the contest.
Tyrese Hall pulled one back at minute 50 and Max Robson equalized less than a minute later when he headed home.
Olusesi tucked in at the back post after a ball was drilled across the box to complete the turnaround, before goals from Jayden Williams and Maxwell McKnight added gloss to the score line for the visitors.
With his goal in the north London derby, Olusesi has now scored three goals in his last four appearances in the Premier League 2.
Arsenal U21 coach Mehmet Ali made a triple change in the 67th minutes, one of which saw Annous enter the game as a substitute for his Premier League 2 debut.
