'Boniface is a fantastic player' - Ex-Super Eagles defender gives vote of confidence to Leverkusen star
Published: November 13, 2024Former Super Eagles defender Chikelue Iloenyosi has called for patience and support for Victor Boniface as the young striker continues to face challenges with the Nigerian national team.
Boniface, who plays for Bayern Leverkusen, has yet to replicate his club form in the Super Eagles, despite an encouraging debut in 2023.
The 23-year-old made his debut in a dominant 6-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe, coming on as a substitute in the 64th minute for Taiwo Awoniyi.
During his brief time on the pitch, Boniface assisted Samuel Chukwueze, sparking hope for his future with the national team.
However, since that appearance, Boniface has struggled to find the back of the net for Nigeria in an official match, with his only goal coming in a friendly against Saudi Arabia in 2023.
Despite the difficulties, Boniface's form for Bayern Leverkusen has kept him in contention for the Super Eagles.
His impressive performances in the Bundesliga, where he scored 14 goals and provided eight assists in his debut season, have continued this year, with eight goals and one assist in 15 appearances across all competitions.
Ahead of Nigeria's crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin on Thursday, November 14, at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Iloenyosi expressed his belief in Boniface's potential.
"Nigeria does not have patience for failure, but Boniface is a fantastic player. We need to give him time," Chikelue Iloenyosi told Premium Times.
"He's doing well in his club, and once he starts scoring for the country, he has the potential to become a top goalscorer."
Iloenyosi further praised Boniface's discipline and work ethic.
"Bundesliga is all about fitness; if you're not fit, you can't play. Boniface is a fantastic player, very obedient and a nice boy. I'm supporting him in everything," he added.
As the Super Eagles prepare for the match against Benin, Nigeria leads Group D with 10 points from four matches, needing just a draw to secure their place in the 2025 AFCON.
Benin, however, sits second in the group with six points and will be desperate for a win to keep their qualification hopes alive.
