'Let's see'- History-making Arsenal midfielder leaning towards representing Three Lions over Super Eagles
Published: December 30, 2024
Ethan Nwaneri has indicated that his international future lies with his country of birth, England, rather than Nigeria,
expressing his desire to progress to the senior team in the coming years.
Born in London, Ethan qualifies to play for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian father, Obi Nwaneri, who offers extra training sessions to him and his younger brother at Hale End, Emerson.
Nwaneri made Premier League history when he came on as a substitute in Arsenal's 3-0 victory against Brentford on September 18, 2022 at the age of 15 years and 181 days, becoming the youngest player to ever appear in the top flight of English football.
Since his historic debut against the Bees, the dual-national attacking midfielder has played in the Carabao Cup and UEFA Champions League.
Nwaneri became provisionally cap-tied to England back in October 2022 when he played the last eleven minutes of a European U17 Championship qualifier against Lithuania.
Without making an appearance for the Young Lions at the U18 level, Nwaneri, the standout player of England's 2024 U17 Euro squad, was promoted to the U19s and has captained the team several times this season
He has scored an impressive six goals in nine outings for England U19s, while registering an assist.
When questioned about his passion for international football, Nwaneri told Arsenal's official webpage: "I’ve always enjoyed England camps – it’s really good.
"You meet up with your friends from different clubs and it breaks the circuit a bit. It’s a change of scenery and sometimes that can do you good.
"I’m enjoying playing for the 19s, and now I’m looking to step up more. I’m always looking to step up whenever I play, so let’s see what happens."
Emerson, Ethan's younger brother, is aiming to follow in his footsteps after accepting a call-up to an England U15 training camp in November 2024.
