Nwakali's first goal in English football nominated for Barnsley GOTM, how you can help him win
Published: January 06, 2025Kelechi Nwakali's first goal in English football has been shortlisted for Barnsley's Goal of the Month award for December 2024.
On his full debut in the League One, the Nigeria international put his name on the scoresheet as Barnsley defeated Exeter City 2-1 at St James Park on December 14.
After Josh Magennis broke the deadlock at minute 13, Nwakali equalized for the visitors three minutes into the second half.
Operating in a deep-lying midfield role, the Arsenal youth product netted his first Barnsley goal in style, firing the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area on the half-volley after a bouncing ball fell to him.
Nwakali's fantastic strike is one of four goals up for Barnsley's Goal of the Month prize.
The 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner's strike has been nominated for the monthly accolade, alongside goals from Davis Keillor-Dunn, Adam Phillips and Jon Russell.
Five years after his departure from Arsenal, Nwakali returned to England last summer, inking a three-year deal with The Reds.
Having missed the whole of pre-season preparations, the Nigeria international was lacking match fitness after his arrival at Barnsley but gradually forced his way into the plans of manager Darrell Clarke.
Nwakali has been given minutes in nine of the last thirteen games played by Barnsley in the League One, three of which he started.
Here's how you can help Nwakali win Barnsley's Goal of the Month.
