Awoniyi v Chris Wood: Liverpool icon Michael Owen reckons Forest boss is facing a selection dilemma
Published: January 07, 2025
Former Liverpool forward Michael Owen has suggested that Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo faces a tough selection dilemma between strikers Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi following Forest's impressive 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux Stadium on Monday night.
Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin, has struggled for regular starting opportunities this season due to the brilliant form of Wood.
The Nigerian forward came off the bench in the 88th minute and scored his first goal of the season, converting a cut-back from James Ward-Prowse in the closing moments of the game.
Earlier in the match, Wood had continued his fine scoring form, netting Forest's second goal just before halftime with a composed finish from Callum Hudson-Odoi's delivery.
The goal marked Wood's 12th strike in 20 Premier League appearances this campaign.
Despite Wood's consistent scoring run, Owen believes Awoniyi remains a strong contender for the starting role, praising Forest's squad depth during his post-match analysis on Premier League Productions.
"Awoniyi, as you said, he was scoring, banging them in Chris Wood pace only last season and now he can't get into the team, understably so," Owen remarked.
"Lovely problems there to have to choose between those two and have the players as well to come on and make a difference.
"Things are good and they are keeping a lot of their players fit, that's so important in the game nowadays if you've got a fit squad."
The win propelled Nottingham Forest to third place in the Premier League table, trailing only Liverpool and Arsenal.
It also marked their sixth consecutive league victory, setting a new club record for successive wins in the Premier League.
