FA Cup: Butler-Oyedeji unused substitute as 10-man Man Utd defy the odds to beat Arsenal
Published: January 12, 2025
Young Nigerian forward Butler-Oyedeji remained an unused substitute as 10-man Manchester United defied the odds to beat Arsenal in an Emirates FA Cup clash on Sunday evening.
The Red Devils took the lead with a strike from Bruno Fernandes in the 52nd minute, but Arsenal responded through Gabriel Magalhães' equalizer eleven minutes later.
Manchester United ultimately secured their place in the next round of the FA Cup with a 5-4 victory in the penalty shootout.
Butler-Oyedeji has trained several times with the first team but is yet to make his senior debut.
The 22-year-old has now been named on the bench seven times for the Gunners this season (four in the UEFA Champions League, two in the Premier League, and once in the FA Cup).
Despite not featuring in the game, Butler-Oyedeji's impressive performances for Arsenal's U21 side in the Premier League 2 have kept him in the spotlight.
The Nigerian-eligible forward has scored eight goals and provided six assists in 12 matches for the development squad in the Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy, sparking speculations about his long-term future at the club.
He has been linked with a potential January move to Swiss side FC Zurich, although Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta continues to monitor his progress closely.
While he may be disappointed not to have made his debut against Manchester United, Butler-Oyedeji will aim to continue his fine form in the Premier League 2.
He would hope his consistent performances will convince Arteta to hand him his long-awaited first-team opportunity.
