'Both of them were crosses' - Liverpool icon Owen reacts to Iwobi's 'incredible' brace v West Ham
Published: January 15, 2025Fulham were beaten 3-2 by West Ham United at the London Stadium in Graham Potter's first Premier League game as coach of the Hammers.
A beautifully taken goal by Carlos Soler opened the scoring for the Hammers just past the half hour mark and Tomas Soucek doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute, converting a cutback from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Five minutes into the second half, Alex Iwobi scored when his cross from the left wing evaded West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who was distracted by Mexican striker Raúl Jiménez.
Lucas Paquetá was able to restore West Ham's two goal advantage in the 67th minute after Bernd Leno made a horrible error to present the Brazilian with his chance.
Iwobi's second goal was almost a carbon copy of his first, as the Nigeria international flighted the ball past the goalkeeper and Harry Wilson before it found its way into the net at minute 78
Speaking on Premier League Productions after the game, Liverpool icon Michael Owen noted that the two shots were intended as crosses but ended up in the back of the net.
Reacting to Iwobi's first strike, he said: "It's a mistake and then it's a cross. Could the goalkeeper do better? I am not sure. It's quite a tricky one Shaun."
Owen added that the Fulham midfielder's second goal was similar to the first, "Iwobi scoring two goals and both of them were crosses. Incredible."
Iwobi, known for his creativity and technical skill, has taken his game to new heights in the 2024-2025 season, earning plaudits from fans and pundits.
The Hale End Academy graduate has registered ten goal involvements - his best in a single Premier League season.
