2026 WCQ: The three defenders who deserve to be named in Eric Chelle's first Super Eagles squad

As the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers approach, several Nigerian players across Europe and the domestic league are staking a claim for a place in the Super Eagles squad.

With Nigeria sitting fifth in Group C with just three points—four points behind leaders Rwanda and South Africa—newly appointed Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle will be under pressure to assemble a strong squad for the crucial matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.

Ahead of the highly anticipated call-up, allnigeriasoccer.COM highlights three defenders who have shown outstanding performances at their respective clubs and deserve a place in Chelle’s squad.

Tosin Adarabioyo (Chelsea, England)

Since joining Chelsea from Fulham in the summer, Tosin Adarabioyo has begun to establish himself as a reliable center-back for the Blues.

The 27-year-old struggled for game time initially but has recently stepped up in the absence of Wesley Fofana, featuring regularly across all competitions.

Adarabioyo has proven to be effective both defensively and offensively, scoring four goals in 21 matches across the English Premier League and FA Cup.

His aerial ability, composure on the ball, and defensive awareness make him a solid option for Nigeria’s crucial qualifiers.

Kevin Akpoguma (Hoffenheim, Germany)

A seasoned defender, Kevin Akpoguma has been a standout performer for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga despite the club’s struggles this season.

The 29-year-old has developed into a key defensive figure, featuring in 20 Bundesliga games this season.

His ability to play out from the back, coupled with his experience and aerial dominance, makes him a perfect replacement for Semi Ajayi, who is currently unavailable.

Junior Nduka (Remo Stars, Nigeria)

One of the most consistent defenders in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Junior Nduka has been a rock at the back for Remo Stars and the CHAN Eagles (home-based Super Eagles).

As captain during the CHAN AFCON qualifiers against Ghana, Nduka played a crucial role in Nigeria’s 3-1 victory over the Black Galaxies in the second leg.

His defensive leadership was also evident in the first-leg goalless draw, where he helped Nigeria withstand immense pressure from the hosts.

With his youthfulness, tactical awareness, and offensive contributions, Nduka could bring fresh energy and competition to Chelle’s defense as Nigeria fights to turn around its qualification campaign.

As Eric Chelle prepares his first squad list for the Super Eagles, the inclusion of Tosin, Akpoguma, and Nduka could bolster Nigeria’s defense and increase their chances of securing crucial victories against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
