Uche sends message to Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle with goal for Getafe in win against Girona
Published: February 14, 2025
Getafe midfielder Christantus Uche made a strong case for a Super Eagles call-up after scoring in his side's 2-1 victory over Girona on Friday night at Estadi Municipal de Montilivi (Girona).
The 21-year-old Nigerian opened the scoring for the Madrid-based club in the third minute, capitalizing on a defensive error to fire into the bottom right corner.
After Girona's Yangel Herrera equalized at minute 54, Borja Mayoral secured the win for Getafe two minutes past the hour mark.
Uche's goal was his third of the La Liga season in 24 appearances, further strengthening his reputation as a key performer for Getafe.
In addition to his goals, he has provided two assists, helping his side stay clear of the relegation zone.
His impressive form has sparked discussions about a potential Super Eagles call-up ahead of Nigeria's crucial 2026 Fifa World Cup qualification matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Nigeria currently sits fifth in their qualification group with just three points from four matches, trailing Rwanda and South Africa, who occupy the top two spots, by four points.
With their World Cup hopes hanging in the balance, the Super Eagles must win both upcoming games to stay in contention.
Uche, who has yet to make his debut for Nigeria, will be hoping that his performances earn him a place in Eric Chelle's squad as the team fights to secure a spot in the global tournament.
