History-maker: UEFA confirm Lookman set a Nigerian record after scoring for Atalanta in UCL
Published: February 19, 2025
UEFA confirmed on Tuesday night that Ademola Lookman made history after scoring for Atalanta in their UEFA Champions League clash against Club Brugge.
Lookman became the first Nigerian player to score in four successive appearances in the UEFA Champions League, between the group stage or league phase to final.
However, despite his record-breaking achievement, his side suffered a 3-1 defeat at the Gewiss Stadium, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.
Lookman, who had been sidelined with a knee injury, made an immediate impact upon his return.
His goal reignited hope for Atalanta, who were trailing 2-1 from the first leg.
The Nigerian forward’s remarkable scoring run in the Champions League includes goals in each of his last four appearances, further cementing his reputation as a key player for the Italian club.
The Atalanta number 11 found the net against VfB Stuttgart, followed by goals against Real Madrid, Sturm Graz and Club Brugge.
UEFA officially confirmed Lookman’s record, acknowledging him as the first Nigerian to achieve this milestone in the competition, spanning from the group stage (or league phase) to the final.
Despite his personal success, Lookman’s night took a difficult turn when he missed a crucial penalty in the second half.
With Atalanta desperately searching for an equalizer, the forward stepped up to take the spot-kick, even though teammates Mateo Retegui and Charles De Ketelaere were also available.
However, his effort was denied by Club Brugge’s goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, a former Liverpool player, dealing a significant blow to Atalanta’s comeback hopes.
Despite the setback, Lookman’s historic feat in the Champions League emphasizes his growing influence on the European stage.
His ability to score consistently in such a prestigious tournament demonstrates his development into one of Nigeria’s top attacking talents.
Atalanta’s Champions League elimination marks a disappointing end to their European campaign, particularly after last season’s impressive Europa League triumph.
With the club now shifting focus to domestic competitions, the team will look to regroup and build upon their performances.
