Jacob Murphy bags assist as Newcastle United beat Liverpool to win Carabao Cup

Jacob Murphy played a key role in Newcastle United’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday evening, providing an assist as the Magpies lifted their first major trophy since 1969.

Right on the stroke of half-time, Dan Burn planted his header in the bottom corner to break the deadlock following a delivery from  Kieran Trippier.

Murphy, who started on the right flank, was instrumental in Newcastle's second goal, setting up Alexander Isak in the 52nd minute.

The winger delivered a precise pass that allowed Isak to fire a first-time shot past Caoimhin Kelleher, sealing the victory for Eddie Howe’s side.

Murphy was a constant threat throughout the match, troubling Liverpool’s backline with his pace and deliveries.

In the 69th minute, he nearly got on the scoresheet himself, firing a shot from the edge of the box that went just wide of the post.

Federico Chiesa reduced the deficit with a tidy low shot in stoppage time after a prolonged VAR review.

Murphy’s contribution in the final comes at a time when discussions about his international future have resurfaced.

With England’s latest squad announcement omitting his name, the 30-year-old winger remains eligible to represent Nigeria through his heritage.

This development could spark interest from the Nigerian Football Federation, potentially paving the way for Murphy to switch allegiance to the Super Eagles.
