Ex-Bendel Insurance GK inspired by Nwabali's rise, dreams of making Super Eagles debut v Rwanda

Amas Obasogie, the former Bendel Insurance goalkeeper, is eager to make his mark with the Super Eagles as he eyes a potential debut in Nigeria’s FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.

The shot-stopper has drawn inspiration from Stanley Nwabali’s rise to prominence and hopes to follow a similar path to becoming Nigeria’s number one.

Obasogie, who now plays for Tanzanian club Singida Blackstars, was one of three goalkeepers invited by Coach Eric Chelle for the crucial qualifier.

While he acknowledges the tough competition for the starting spot, the 24-year-old is determined to seize his opportunity if called upon.

"I respect the effort Stanley Nwabali has put into claiming the number one shirt. Remember, he also proved himself in the NPFL before doing the same in Chippa United,” Obasogie said as quoted by The Cable.

Nwabali, now Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, rose to prominence after impressing in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) with Enyimba before moving to South Africa’s Chippa United.

His performances in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) further cemented his status as a reliable option between the posts.

Obasogie hopes to replicate Nwabali’s journey, having also made a name for himself in the NPFL with Bendel Insurance, where he was named the league’s best goalkeeper last season.

He believes that training with the Super Eagles is a golden opportunity to develop his skills and prove his worth at the international level.

“So being in the Eagles camp is a huge opportunity for me, I respect all the players, and the experience improves me tremendously. I train with the mentality that I am a Super Eagles goalkeeper and dream of myself putting on the national team jersey,” he added.

Nigeria’s goalkeeping department has seen increased competition in recent years, with Nwabali emerging as a solid option, while Francis Uzoho and Maduka Okoye have also been part of the squad.

However, Obasogie is determined to carve out a place for himself and make an impression on the coaching staff.

With Nigeria preparing to face Rwanda in a crucial World Cup qualifier, Obasogie understands the significance of the occasion.

The Super Eagles are under pressure to secure a positive result, and while Nwabali remains the favorite to start, Obasogie is ready to step up if given the chance.

“If the opportunity comes to represent Nigeria, I aim to play my part and take it fully,” he said.

His call-up is a testament to his progress and determination, and a strong showing in training could see him earn his debut sooner rather than later.

As he continues to work hard in camp, Obasogie will be hoping to follow in Nwabali’s footsteps and establish himself as a trusted option for the Super Eagles in their World Cup qualification campaign.
