Two English-born goalkeepers on Nigeria Football Federation's radar keep clean sheets for EFL clubs
Published: April 06, 2025
Two English-born goalkeepers, Arthur Okonkwo and Owen Goodman, delivered impressive performances over the weekend, keeping clean sheets for their respective English Football League clubs and further strengthening their cases for potential Super Eagles call-ups.
While Arsenal academy graduate Okonkwo is on the radar of Nigeria Football Federation's technical director Augustine Eguavoen, tri-national goalkeeper Owen Goodman was called up by the NFF for a Flying Eagles training camp before the 2023 Fifa U20 World Cup.
Arthur qualifies to play for the Super Eagles through his father Uba Okonkwo who is originally from Anambra State, while Owen's mother is Nigerian.
Okonkwo was in inspired form as Wrexham cruised to a 3-0 victory over Burton Albion in a League One clash at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday afternoon.
The 23-year-old made two crucial saves, helping Wrexham tighten their grip on second place in the league as they edge closer to Championship promotion.
In League Two, 21-year-old Owen Goodman was also rock solid between the sticks for AFC Wimbledon, playing a key role in their hard-fought 1-0 win over Harrogate Town.
Goodman kept his side in the match with a string of vital saves, including a stunning stop from close range before Alistair Smith's 77th minute goal sealed the win for the hosts.
Despite Stanley Nwabali’s current status as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, Nigeria manager Eric Chelle is believed to be scouting for quality depth to provide competition and cover, especially as the team gears up for crucial international fixtures.
