Obafemi Martins Won't Get Late Recall
Published: December 31, 2012Contrary to trending reports in the local media (not allnigeriasoccer) , Levante attacker Obafemi Martins won't be handed a late recall to the Super Eagles, who are in a training camp in Faro, Portugal preparing for the African Cup of Nations.
Super Eagles spokesman Ben Alaiya was quoted as saying by MTNFootball.com: Stephen Keshi has made it clear that he will not call up any new player as he has enough players to choose from for the Nations Cup.''
England based duo of Shola Ameobi (Newcastle United) and Danny Shittu (Millwall) are questionable for the tourney. The later has reportedly informed the Nigeria Federation that he has opted out of the squad.
''There is no word from Ameobi yet on whether he will be part of our Nations Cup preparations. Keshi said he cannot force the player to play for the country and so he is still waiting to hear from Ameobi on his position and then we will take it from there.''
There are now 20 players - 9 foreign based professionals and 11 players from the domestic championship - in the Faro camp of the Super Eagles. The team's first test is on Wednesday against the Catalonia National team.
