Super Eagles forward Terem Moffi scored his first Europa League goal for FC Porto as the Portuguese side secured a 2-1 victory over Stuttgart in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16 clash staged at MHPArena on Thursday evening.
Moffi opened the scoring in the 21st minute, calmly finishing into the left side of the goal after being set up by teammate Borja Sainz.
The Nigerian international’s strike marked his first in Europe’s second-tier competition and his second goal for Porto since joining the club on loan from OGC Nice during the winter transfer window.
He had previously netted his maiden goal for the club in the Primeira Liga.
Porto doubled their advantage six minutes later when Rodrigo Mora fired a first-time shot from inside the box past Stuttgart goalkeeper Alexander Nübel, putting the visitors firmly in control.
Stuttgart struggled to find a rhythm in the first half, with their efforts from distance and set-pieces failing to seriously test Porto’s defence and goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
Another Nigerian, Zaidu Sanusi, played a key role in Porto’s victory by providing the assist for Rodrigo Mora’s goal, highlighting his growing influence in the team’s attacking play.
The defender’s contribution helped maintain Porto’s momentum and ensured they remained a constant threat throughout the match.
Stuttgart responded five minutes before the break, with Deniz Undav scoring in the 40th minute to pull a goal back for the Bundesliga side.
The German side pushed for an equaliser, and Angelo Stiller thought he had scored in the 70th minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
Despite a late surge and substitutions from coach Sebastian Hoeness, Stuttgart could not find a way past Porto’s defence.
