Super Eagles striker Sadiq involved in Key VAR moment in Valencia's defeat to Villarreal

Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq was at the centre of a decisive VAR moment as Valencia suffered a 2–1 defeat to Villarreal in a tightly contested LaLiga clash at the Estadio de La Cerámica on Sunday, February 22.

The match was largely defined by a VAR review involving the Nigerian forward, which resulted in Valencia taking the lead before Villarreal completed a comeback victory.

Both teams began cautiously, with Valencia maintaining a compact defensive shape while looking to exploit attacking opportunities through quick transitions.

Sadiq became a constant threat to the Villarreal defence with his intelligent forward runs. Midway through the first half, Valencia created their key breakthrough.

Just past the half-hour mark, a well-delivered through ball found Sadiq, who used his long stride to reach the ball ahead of defender and goalkeeper Luiz Júnior.

The forward’s movement caused a scramble inside the penalty area, and after a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty after determining that Sadiq had been impeded.

Largie Ramazani converted the resulting spot-kick to give Valencia a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.

Following the goal, Villarreal increased attacking pressure in search of an equaliser.

Santi Comesaña restored parity shortly after, finishing a move that brought the hosts back into the game.

Villarreal then took control early in the second half when Pape Gueye scored from the penalty spot to complete the turnaround and give the hosts a 2-1 advantage in first half stoppage time.

Valencia attempted to respond with sustained attacking pressure in the final stages of the match.

Sadiq remained involved in attacking moves, contributing with hold-up play and aerial challenges. However, Villarreal maintained defensive organisation to protect their lead.

In the closing minutes, Sadiq was shown a yellow card as tensions increased during the contest.
