For the first time this season, Cyriel Dessers and Paul Onuachu started a game together for Racing Genk as they were held to a goalless draw by Standard Liege at Maurice Dufrasne Stadion on Sunday afternoon.
The summer signing from Heracles Almelo got the nod to lead the line in Racing Genk's first two games of the new season but manager Hannes Wolf tweaked his formation by setting up in a standard 4-4-2 system, with the two Nigerian strikers spearheading the attack.
The brewing rivalry between Dessers and Nigeria national-teamer Onuachu could extend to the Super Eagles as the Belgian-born attacker is on the radar of coach Gernot Rohr ahead of the resumption of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Dessers admitted that he got on well with Onuachu in the first half against Standard Liege but things were a little different in the second half.
On playing in attack with Onuachu, Dessers told Eleven Sports (via voetbalbelgie) : "That went well in the first half and we were able to benefit from each other.
"In the second half it was a bit less."
Onuachu and Dessers were both on target in Genk's opening day win against SV Zulte Waregem.
