The 50 best teenage wonderkids in football: Super Eagles targets Nwaneri and Ahanor make prestigious list

Super Eagles–eligible youngsters Ethan Nwaneri and Honest Ahanor have been named among the 50 best teenage footballers in the world.

The recognition places the two rising stars among the most promising young talents globally and highlights Nigeria’s potential to secure their international allegiance in the future.

Nwaneri, who enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with the Gunners last season, is currently playing on loan for Olympique Marseille in France.

The 18-year-old scored nine goals and provided two assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.

Despite his breakthrough campaign, Nwaneri had limited opportunities this season due to strong competition for places from established stars such as Eberechi Eze and club captain Martin Ødegaard.

In search of regular playing time, Nwaneri secured a temporary move to Marseille, where he has continued to impress in Ligue 1.

Since arriving in France, the youngster has scored two goals and registered one assist in seven league appearances.

Meanwhile, Ahanor has emerged as one of the standout teenage defenders in Italy following his move to Atalanta from Genoa during the summer transfer window.

Born in Aversa, Italy, the 18-year-old centre-back has impressed at the Bergamo-based club with his tactical intelligence, composure on the ball, and strong defensive presence both on the ground and in the air.

Ahanor has made 28 appearances across competitions for Atalanta this season and scored his first goal for the club during an Coppa Italia fixture against his former side Genoa in December 2025.

Their impressive performances have also earned both players nominations for the annual NXGN list, compiled by Goal.com to recognise the best teenage footballer in world football.

Nwaneri and Ahanor are shortlisted alongside several of Europe’s most highly rated young talents, including Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí of FC Barcelona, Real Madrid's Franco Mastantuono, and Estêvão Willian of Chelsea.

Despite their international affiliations with England and Italy at youth level, both players remain eligible to represent Nigeria national football team.

Nwaneri has previously featured for England’s youth teams, while Ahanor recently received his first call-up to the Italy U21 national team for the March international window.

However, neither player has made a senior international appearance, meaning Nigeria still has the opportunity to convince the highly rated prospects to pledge their future to the Super Eagles.
