'We have a sport that allows for tackles' - Former Bayern coach defends Otele after red card

Hamburg legend Felix Magath has defended Super Eagles forward Philip Otele following his controversial red card, insisting the incident was more about poor judgment in a fast-paced duel than any deliberate intent to harm an opponent.

The former Bayern Munich and Schalke manager said the dismissal highlighted what he described as increasingly harsh officiating standards in the Bundesliga, where split-second decisions in physical challenges are often punished with immediate disciplinary action.

Magath argued that Otele's movement during the incident did not suggest malicious intent.

"I don't believe he intended to hit his opponent. We have a sport that allows for tackles," Magath told Hamburger Morgen Post.

"Goals are one thing in football, but the second most beautiful or important thing is the tackles.

"It's nothing like what we see here in the Bundesliga in England. We've gotten into the habit of wrapping everything in cotton wool for the last few years."

He added that while Otele made an error in the moment, the severity of the punishment did not fully reflect the nature of the challenge.

"It's simply part of a sport like football to engage in challenges. And as long as there's no intention to only hit the opponent, in my view, one has to be more careful with yellow and red cards."

The incident occurred during Hamburg’s 3-1 defeat to Werder Bremen in a heated North derby, where Otele was dismissed for what officials ruled as rough play against an opponent.

The German Football Association (DFB) later upheld the decision, rejecting Hamburg’s appeal and confirming a two-match suspension.

As a result, Otele will miss crucial Bundesliga fixtures against Hoffenheim and Eintracht Frankfurt, further compounding Hamburg’s attacking concerns at a key stage of the season.

Despite the club’s objections, the DFB maintained its stance, leaving the suspension in place.
