'We won the midfield battle' - Eric Chelle reveals why Onyeka started against Tunisia

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has revealed the reasoning behind his midfield selection in Nigeria’s 3-2 victory over Tunisia in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The coach made a few changes to the team that defeated Tanzania 2-1 in their opening game of the tournament, with Samuel Chukwueze dropping out and Frank Onyeka introduced into midfield, while Bruno Onyemaechi replaced Zaidu Sanusi at left-back.

Speaking on his tactical approach, Chelle explained the thinking behind these adjustments.

“You know, against Tanzania, we suppose that when they play us, they might stay low on the pitch. So I wanted to put some player who can play well with the ball and against Tunisia I wanted that we put a lot of intensity of aggressivity on the pitch, particularly in the midfield. So, we won the battle of the midfield during 75 minutes I think I gave you an answer for that,” Chelle said in the mixed zone post-match.

Chelle’s comments underline his focus on controlling the central areas of the pitch, with Onyeka’s introduction playing a pivotal role in the Super Eagles’ performance.

The midfielder’s presence allowed Nigeria to impose their style, maintain possession, and create the opportunities that led to their three-goal haul against the Eagles of Carthage.

With the victory over Tunisia, the three-time Africa Cup of Nations champions secured their spot in the round of 16, continuing their strong start in the tournament.

Chelle’s adjustments and tactical decisions were key in ensuring the team maintained dominance in crucial areas of the pitch.

Looking ahead, Nigeria will face Uganda in their final group phase game on Tuesday.
