'We worked all week to win' - Nwakaeme highlights Trabzonspor's determination to beat Galatasaray

Former Super Eagles invitee Anthony Nwakaeme praised his teammates at Trabzonspor following a 2-1 statement win over reigning champions Galatasaray in a Super Lig clash at Papara Park on Saturday evening.

Not only did Anthony Nwakaeme provide an assist, but two other Nigerians also played key roles in Trabzonspor's victory.

Paul Onuachu opened the scoring within the first four minutes—the earliest goal Galatasaray have conceded all season—before Chibuike Nwaiwu's headed strike in the 62nd minute proved to be the game-winner.

A fan favourite from his first spell at Trabzonspor, Nwakaeme is no longer an automatic starter, with Saturday's clash against Galatasaray marking just his fourth start of the season across all competitions.

"It was a very important match. We were aware of that. Galatasaray are a good team," Nwakaeme was quoted as saying by Fanatik.

"We worked all week to win. We knew that if we won, we would get much closer to our opponent. We are very happy for our city and our team."

Reflecting on the team's mentality, Nwakaeme emphasised the family-like spirit within the squad.

"It wasn't a surprising setting at all. Everyone, whether they played or not, wanted to win. That’s the spirit of being a family. And that’s what happened today."

Looking ahead, Nwakaeme stressed the importance of maintaining focus and consistency in the remaining fixtures.

"Every match is important. We've taken the first and important step. There are six weeks left. We’ll start with Alanyaspor. We'll take it one match at a time and try to win every game."

Trabzonspor's win over Galatasaray brings them within one point of their rivals, though the Istanbul club have a match in hand.
