Why Flying Eagles GK Akpan Udoh Conceded Cheap Goals Against Sudan

It has come to light that Flying Eagles goalkeeper Akpan Udoh was off-colour during the national team’s 4-3 loss to Sudan in an Africa U20 Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday because of uncertainties surrounding his future.

Accusing fingers have been pointed at retired Nigeria international Danny Shittu, who promised the youngster a club after the Fifa U17 World Cup but has not been able to deliver, and this affected the psychology of the player.

“Before the game Udoh has been despondent and has been lamenting that Shittu has not been able to get him a club in Europe, ”a source close to Udoh told allnigeriasoccer.com.

“But goalkeepers don’t move easily. Amos Benjamin, the reserve goalkeeper, has already found a club in Italy but Udoh that was in goal during the World Cup is being fooled around.

“He has been crying because everyone is blaming him for the defeat and he conceded cheap goals.”

Akpan Udoh was on the books of Remo Academy during the 2015 Fifa Under 17 World Cup and becomes eligible to sign a professional contract next summer.

Ifeanyi Emmanuel
