Bayer Leverkusen manager Kasper Hjulmand has cast doubt on Nathan Tella’s readiness for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Tella, who picked up an injury in September, only returned to action in the 3-1 win over Wolfsburg in November 22.
However, the Nigerian international has struggled for minutes since then, making just one brief appearance totaling 13 minutes across all competitions.
With Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle set to release his AFCON squad soon, Tella’s limited game time has raised concerns over his availability.
Speaking ahead of the DFB-Pokal clash with Borussia Dortmund, Hjulmand admitted that the winger is still not fully fit to start matches.
"Tella is completely ready. He's not at 100 percent, he's not quite ready for 90 minutes,” but it's great that Nathan is back, " he said as quoted by Kicker.
The coach also praised the forward’s qualities, highlighting his versatility and intelligent movement on the pitch.
“He's making those runs behind the defense and he's ready to play. He can play on the wing, but also a bit further inside, like in Manchester, as a second striker. He knows what to do."
Nigeria has been placed in Group C for the biennial tournament, where they will face Tanzania, Uganda, and Tunisia.
