FIFA Chief Legal Officer Emilio García Silvero has claimed that it would be impossible to automatically extend the contracts of players that expire on June 30 as proposed by football governing body, FIFA last week.
Football activities have been suspended across the globe as a precautionary measure to slow the spread of coronavirus and a return date is not cast in stone due to the pandemic.
Nigerian players such as Oghenekaro Etebo, Chidozie Awaziem and Victor Moses have been loaned out by Stoke City, Porto and Chelsea respectively until the end of the 2019-2020 season but have to return to their parent clubs on July 1, 2020 even if the season has not been concluded.
Sheyi Ojo is playing at Glasgow Rangers on loan from Liverpool while Shanghai Shenhua-owned striker Odion Ighalo has a loan deal with Manchester United until May 31.
In the event that these players return to their parent clubs, they cannot be registered as the transfer market will remain closed.
"FIFA cannot extend contracts beyond the 30th June, but the transfer windows will not be the same as before and therefore players cannot be registered," Silvero told Spanish radio station Cadena de Ondas Populares Españolas.
"The players on loan will return to the teams that hold the transfer cards, but they will still not be able to take to the pitch as the market will be closed."
