Nigerian Fullback Makes Starting Debut For Chelsea U18s, Fresh From Signing A New Contract

Nigerian fullback Derrick Abu finally made his starting debut for Chelsea U18s as they were beaten 2-1 by Reading in an U18 Premier League match held at Cobham Training Center on Saturday afternoon.

Last week, Abu took to social media to confirm that he has signed his first professional contract with Chelsea, a reward for the progress he has made since he joined the club at U11 level from local club Coezer FC.

The 2003-born defender featured as a substitute in four league matches against Crystal Palace, Reading, Norwich City and West Brom before he was named in the starting lineup for today's clash against the Royals.

With Chelsea leading 1-0 thanks to a Charlie Webster goal, Abu was replaced by Jimi Tauriainen with a quarter of an hour remaining.

Reading restored parity through Nigerian attacking midfielder Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan a minute after Abu was substituted, before a goal from Harvey Maudner five minutes from time completed the turnaround.

An attacking fullback whose playing style has been compared to Trent Alexander-Arnold, Abu was a key member of the Chelsea squad that beat Manchester City in the final of the Premier League U16 International Tournament in 2019.
