'We will miss him' - Awaziem admits Ndidi absence a major blow as focus turns to DR Congo

Nigeria defender Chidozie Awaziem has admitted that the Super Eagles will feel the absence of midfielder Wilfred Ndidi in Sunday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff final against DR Congo, describing his suspension as a significant blow but expressing full confidence in the squad’s depth and mentality.

Awaziem, who featured in Nigeria’s 4–1 extra-time victory over Gabon in the semifinal, said the team is approaching the decisive fixture with belief and determination.

The centre-back, who also registered an assist in the win, emphasised that the squad’s collective spirit remains strong despite missing one of their most influential players.

Speaking in Rabat after the victory over Gabon, Awaziem reflected on both his personal contribution and the team’s performance.

"It was really an amazing performance for the team, not just for me. I’m really excited that I got some minutes and also the win and the assist.

"I’m really happy that we got the win yesterday, which we deserve, and now we just focus on the next game on Sunday."

He described the semifinal as just the first step of a bigger mission.

"First we had the first game which was the first step and yes, we won the game. Now we already know what is at stake.

"We know that this is another step closer to the World Cup. So we just keep the same spirit, the same energy that we used in the first game."

On Ndidi’s absence, Awaziem did not hide its impact: "We’re definitely going to miss him".

However, he stressed that the team has reliable options ready to step up.

"But we have other players as well who can play the same position and who are good as well,” he continued.

"We trust everyone. The coach trusts everyone, everyone’s ability, and I just hope that whoever comes in the position of Wilfred is going to try to do better than him or try to give it all so that the team can come out with a victory.”

Nigeria will face DR Congo on Sunday in Rabat, with the winner advancing to the inter-confederation playoffs in March 2026.
