'Big kudos to him' - Rangers' Nigerian midfielder reveals why Fernandez earned Super Eagles call-up

Rangers' Nigeria-eligible midfielder Tochi Chukwuani has highlighted that Emmanuel Fernandez earned his first-ever call-up to the Super Eagles due to his impressive performances for the Glasgow club.

While Fernandez joined the Light Blues from League One club Peterborough United last summer, Chukwuani, a former Denmark U21 international, was acquired from Austrian outfit Sturm Graz in the January transfer window.

The Super Eagles centre-back has shown that his reputation as a goalscoring defender is no exaggeration, registering six goals in 27 appearances across all competitions since his arrival at Rangers.

He also scored in his first start for the Super Eagles as the three time African champions were held to a 2-2 draw by Jordan in their most recent international.

With firsthand experience training and playing alongside the newly-capped Nigeria international, Chukwuani is well-placed to assess Fernandez's abilities.

Speaking to reporters at Friday's press conference, Chukwuanni said: "His form has been excellent so far, and long may it last. That's just a big kudos to him for doing well here at Rangers and then earning the call-up.

"And for him to also go and score on his first start is just fantastic, so I hope he can continue with the goals here at Rangers."

Chukwuani acknowledged that Fernandez is a key figure in the Rangers dressing room, admired for his bubbly personality.

"Yes, he is a big character in the dressing room. Obviously now with the performances getting better, he's also taking more and more responsibilities."

Born in London, Fernandez remains eligible to represent England until he makes his competitive debut for the Super Eagles.
