'Lapse of concentration' - Dele-Bashiru identifies moment that allowed Tanzania back into Afcon clash

Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has shed light on the early second-half goal Nigeria conceded in their 2–1 win over Tanzania on Tuesday night at the Fez Stadium in Morocco.

The Lazio midfielder came on after the break, replacing Fulham winger Samuel Chukwueze to mark his debut at the continental tournament.

Charles M'Mombwa pulled the Taifa Stars level early in the second half, wiping out Semi Ajayi’s first-half opener, before Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s lead minutes later with a composed left-footed finish.

Speaking after his Africa Cup of Nations debut, the Lazio midfielder explained that the Super Eagles conceded the goal due to a brief defensive lapse, adding that the team had created plenty of chances to have secured the game earlier.

“We played well today. For the goal we conceded it was a lapse of concentration but we created a lot of chances today,” he said. “I think in another game we finish those chances and the game would have been dead earlier on.

Despite a late surge from the Taifa Stars, the Super Eagles remained resolute to secure the win and begin their AFCON campaign on a strong note.

Reflecting on how Nigeria managed to prevent a late equalizer, Dele-Bashiru emphasized the team’s discipline and adherence to tactical instructions, noting that their commitment to the game plan ultimately ensured they saw out the match successfully.

“Just stick to the game plan. We knew if we stuck to the game plan, we would create chances and we would have opportunities to score and that's what we did,” he revealed.

Looking ahead, the midfielder revealed that the Super Eagles will conduct a detailed review of their performance before turning full focus to their next Group match against Tunisia.

“We don't really know yet. Tomorrow (on Wednesday), we will have a team meeting about this match, we will analyze what we didn't do well and then from there we will analyze Tunisia,” he added.

Dele-Bashiru also extended heartfelt appreciation to Nigerian fans for their unwavering support, emphasizing the role it plays in boosting the team’s morale.

“Thank you very much for all the support, it means a lot to all the players and just keep supporting us in the next couple of matches.”

The Super Eagles sit second in Group C with three points, level with leaders Tunisia, who remain top on superior goal difference.
