Ipswich Town striker Chuba Akpom has claimed that his current squad is stronger than Middlesbrough’s, despite the latter sitting comfortably at the top of the Championship table.
Akpom, who joined the Tractor Boys on loan from Ajax in the summer, previously spent three years at Boro between 2020 and 2023, where he scored 34 goals and provided four assists in 82 appearances across all competitions.
Speaking ahead of Ipswich’s clash against Sheffield United, the former Arsenal forward praised the quality within Kieran McKenna’s side but stressed the importance of cohesion over individual brilliance.
"I'd say this squad on paper is definitely better, but it’s more about gelling," Akpom revealed as reported by twtd.
The 29-year-old pointed to the Paris Saint-Germain side that featured Lionel Messi and Neymar, stressing that success relies more on teamwork and unity than individual talent.
"You look at teams like PSG when they had Messi and Neymar, they didn’t win the Champions League.
"It’s all about the team gelling and everybody sacrificing themselves for the team. If we have that on top of the talent, 100 percent we should do good."
While Middlesbrough have made a flying start to the campaign with four wins from four matches, Ipswich remain winless after three draws and one defeat in their opening fixtures.
With the international break now over, Akpom will be eager to help Town secure their first victory of the season and kick-start their push for a return to the Premier League.
