EFL Awards 2026: CB nearly as tall as Onuachu, Millwall dazzler, Notts County starlet nominated

The English Football League have revealed the official shortlist for the EFL Awards 2026, with three Nigerian players receiving nominations.

Millwall's Femi Azeez, Bromley's Omar Sowunmi and Notts County's Tom Iorpenda are in the hunt for awards, with the winners to be announced at the League's annual ceremony in London on Sunday, April 19.

Femi, elder brother of former Arsenal midfielder Miguel Azeez, has been nominated for the Championship Player of the Season.

The 24-year-old forward, who has registered fifteen goal involvements in this season's Championship, faces competition from Middlesbrough's Hayden Hackney, Coventry City's Carl Rushworth and Swansea City's Zan Vipotnik in his bid to win the prestigious accolade.

Highly-rated Bromley centre-back Sowunmi is in the running for the League Two Player of the Season.

Standing at 6ft 6in, just an inch shy of Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu, Sowunmi has put his height to excellent use, scoring five of his six League Two goals with his head.

Born in Colchester, the 30-year-old is keen to represent the Super Eagles if approached by the Nigeria Football Federation.

The League Two Player of the Season will be contested by Sowunmi, Aaron Drinan (Swindon Town), Mitch Pinnock (Bromley) and Callum Paterson (Milton Keynes Dons).

Iorpenda has been shortlisted for the League Two Young Player of the Season alongside Salford City's Matty Young, Walsall's Daniel Kanu and Gillingham's Sam Gale.

The 21-year-old midfielder has played in all of Notts County's League Two games this season, contributing three goals and six assists.
