'Eric Chelle wants him' - NFF confirm Okonkwo in line for Super Eagles debut next month

The Nigeria Football Federation have confirmed that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is in line to make his debut for the Super Eagles at the upcoming Unity Cup tournament scheduled for next month.

Okonkwo recently completed his switch of international allegiance from England to Nigeria after representing England at youth levels.

Having featured for England at U16, U17 and U18 levels, the former Arsenal shot-stopper was granted Fifaapproval on Monday to represent Nigeria at senior level.

According to an NFF official who spoke to ESPN, Okonkwo expressed strong enthusiasm about the switch, making the process smoother for the federation.

The official also revealed that Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is keen on including the goalkeeper in his plans ahead of the tournament.

"He was very enthusiastic about switching allegiance and playing for Nigeria, and that made things easier for us," the official said.

"The coach {Eric Chelle} wants him, and would like to have him in the squad as soon as possible.”

Okonkwo’s impressive performances this season have further strengthened his case for a national team call-up.

The 24-year-old has made 42 appearances in all competitions and recorded 10 clean sheets in 37 Championship matches, placing him among the top-performing goalkeepers in the division.

The Super Eagles are expected to begin their Unity Cup campaign against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at The Valley, home ground of Charlton Athletic in England.

Nigeria, the defending champions of the competition, won the previous edition after defeating Jamaica on penalties following a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
