Arsenal's Hale End Academy graduate Arthur Okonkwo is further cementing his reputation as one of the EFL Championship’s top goalkeepers, keeping another clean sheet to guide promotion-chasing Wrexham to a 2-0 victory over Swansea City at STōK Cae Ras on Friday night.
The former Young Lions goalkeeper has pledged his international future to Nigeria, and it is widely expected that he will make his senior debut for the African giants in the coming months.
Nathan Broadhead opened the scoring midway through the first half, and Callum Doyle sealed the win by doubling the advantage with two minutes remaining.
However, it was Okonkwo who stole the spotlight, producing a string of crucial saves to claim the Player of the Match accolade
In the 21st minute, the Super Eagles hopeful produced a fine low save to deny Zan Vipotnik from opening the scoring, after earlier keeping out a tame effort from Gonçalo Franco.
Okonkwo was alert in the second half, blocking Marko Stamenić’s effort and later saved Ji-sung Eom’s free-kick in the dying minutes to keep his eleventh clean sheet in all competitions this campaign.
This season, only five goalkeepers in the Championship have kept more clean sheets than Okonkwo, with Coventry’s Carl Rushworth on 13, Ipswich’s Christian Walton on 12, and Charlton’s Thomas Kaminski, Middlesbrough’s Sol Brynn, and Swansea’s Lawrence Vigouroux all on 11.
