England legend Steven Gerrard has urged Calvin Bassey to seek advice from Steven Davis if he wants to become an established player for the Super Eagles and Glasgow Rangers.
Manager Gernot Rohr handed a maiden call-up to the Anglo-Italian-Nigerian defender for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Central African Republic this month, naming him on a 23-man roster, but the left-back didn't taste action in any of the matches.
Davies is still going strong at 36 and is officially the most capped British player of all time, earning his 130th cap against Bulgaria three days ago.
Prior to his first invitation to the Super Eagles, there was so much excitement about Bassey back in Nigeria due to his impressive displays for Gerrard's side, making eight appearances this season, seven of which he started and went the distance.
A centurion for the Three Lions, Gerrard claimed that he wasn't the right person to advise Bassey and teenage Scotland fullback Nathan Patterson because he stopped playing international football seven years ago.
Speaking at Friday's pre-match press conference, Gerrard said : "Thankfully we've got some top individual professionals like Steven Davis who's a role model for the rest of the young lads who've become professionals, the likes of Nathan Patterson and Calvin Bassey, just to watch how Steven Davies goes about his daily work.
"Also the numbers he's hit from a Northern Ireland point of view and to have the career he's had. I mean you won't find a better role model for Nathan and Calvin to become international and top Rangers players for a long time and they should be picking his brain and chatting to him at any given moment for advice moving forward because Steven can give them better advice than me."
Bassey, 21, has come back from international duty with the Super Eagles and is at Gerrard's disposal for Saturday's Scottish Premiership clash against Hearts.
