Hamburg's Otele not alone as another Super Eagles attacker sent off in Europe

Super Eagles forward Olakunle Olusegun endured a mixed outing on Saturday as he was sent off during Pari Nizhny Novgorod’s 1-1 draw against Dynamo Moscow, joining compatriot Philip Otele among Nigerian attackers who received red cards across Europe.

Otele, who came on as a second-half substitute, was unable to make a notable impact before being sent off with eleven minutes remaining in Hamburg’s 3-1 derby defeat to Werder Bremen.

Meanwhile, Olakunle, who started the encounter, made a significant impact in the encounter before his dismissal.

The Nigerian international, on a season-long loan at Pari Nizhny Novgorod from Krasnodar, drew the hosts level after Nicolás Marichal had given the visitors the lead in the 22nd minute.

Olakunle struck in the 34th minute, calmly converting Renaldo Cephas’ assist as he fired past Russian goalkeeper Igor Leshchuk.

The goal marked his fifth of the campaign, alongside two assists in 23 league appearances, as his side continues its fight to avoid relegation.

However, his promising performance was cut short after he received a second yellow card with 16 minutes remaining.

Referee Andrey Prokopov had earlier cautioned him in the 55th minute before issuing the decisive second booking 19 minutes later.

His dismissal means he will miss a crucial relegation showdown against FC Orenburg at the Gazovik Stadium on Wednesday,

His absence will be a significant blow for manager Viktor Goncharenko, who will be hoping to extend the two-point gap between the two sides and boost their chances of retaining their Russian Premier League status.
