Sevilla coach Luis García has backed Chidera Ejuke to retain his place in the starting lineup against RCD Espanyol if the Nigerian winger continues the impressive form he displayed in the victory over Real Sociedad.
Ejuke, who has endured a difficult campaign with the Andalusian side, was a surprise inclusion in the starting eleven as Sevilla secured a crucial 1-0 win over Real Sociedad at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.
The Nigerian international produced one of his most lively performances of the season, constantly troubling the visitors with his direct running while also putting in a disciplined defensive shift to help Sevilla preserve a clean sheet.
Speaking ahead of the clash against Espanyol, García praised the winger’s overall display and stressed that the 28-year-old would continue to feature regularly if he maintains the same intensity and focus.
"If he maintains this level, he'll play," Garcia told reporters during the press conference. "If he's a focused Ejuke, always looking to attack and never losing his way."
The Sevilla boss also highlighted the importance of Ejuke’s defensive contribution, insisting that his work rate without the ball is key to earning a place in the team.
"That's what I told him. If he performs defensively, he has to play. He hasn't played since November, and I understood why he asked to be substituted in the 60th minute because it's a long time, but he held on," he added.
Despite showing signs of fatigue late in the contest, García believes Ejuke still offered the team a major attacking outlet with his pace and direct style of play.
"He found strength, and the crowd helped him a lot. He was a bit tired towards the end, but he has a lot to offer us, at that level and with that directness to attack the opponent and get straight tothe goal," Garcia noted.
Ejuke has struggled for consistency this season, managing one goal and one assist in 24 league appearances for Sevilla.
However, his encouraging display against Real Sociedad could prove to be a turning point as he aims to rediscover his best form and help Sevilla secure the positive results needed to maintain their La Liga status.
