'His presence in training is a surprise' - Werder chief delivers positive update on Boniface

Werder Bremen have received a significant boost in their attacking options as Nigerian forward Victor Boniface continues to make encouraging progress in his recovery from a serious knee injury that once threatened to end his season prematurely.

Boniface, who joined Werder Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, underwent knee surgery in January after sustaining cartilage damage.

At the time, the injury was considered severe enough to rule him out for the remainder of the campaign, with early medical assessments suggesting a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

However, developments in recent weeks have painted a far more optimistic picture.

The 25-year-old has responded well to treatment and rehabilitation, recovering faster than initially anticipated.

Club officials have confirmed that his knee is now stable, with his post-surgery recovery progressing smoothly.

Speaking to Bild on the striker’s condition, Peter Niemeyer, head of professional football at Werder Bremen, expressed satisfaction with Boniface’s progress while stressing the importance of regaining full fitness.

“We knew what kind of shape he was in. He now needs to work on his fitness, and we are helping him with that. But Victor is primarily responsible for that,” Niemeyer said, as quoted by Transfermarkt.

Providing further insight, Niemeyer added: “He has recovered from the surgery better than predicted. His knee is stable, and his rehabilitation has gone well. Of course, he is currently not physically fit and unable to play in the Bundesliga. However, he wants to help the team again. We are now working intensively with him to achieve this goal.”

Boniface has already taken important steps in his comeback, returning to individual training before gradually reintegrating into partial team sessions. His presence back on the training pitch has come as a surprise, given earlier expectations that he would not feature again this season.

Despite the positive signs, the striker is still working to rebuild match fitness after several months out of action.

His potential return would provide a timely boost as the club approaches the decisive final stretch of the season.
