Arsenal's England international Bukayo Saka has spoken about his deep connection to his Nigerian heritage, highlighting how his family background has shaped both his identity and values.

Saka, who represented England at youth levels from U15 to U21, was heavily courted by the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation before making his competitive debut for the Three Lions.

Despite growing up in England, the 24-year-old winger has never forgotten the land of his parents, both of whom were raised in Nigeria.

Before the 2022 World Cup, Saka demonstrated his generosity by teaming up with the children’s charity BigShoe to fund 120 life-changing surgeries for children in Kano, Nigeria.

The operations treated serious medical conditions, including inguinal and umbilical hernias, as well as brain tumours, giving underprivileged children a chance at a healthier life.

Saka credits his parents, who emigrated from Nigeria before he was born, for instilling a strong sense of culture and discipline. 

In a recent interview with the BBC, Saka said: "My name is Bukayo Moses Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka. I am very proud of it (my Nigerian roots). 

"Both my parents grew up in Nigeria, so many of their values have been instilled in me."

In June 2023, Saka was hosted by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the State House, Marina, Lagos.

The 24-year-old captained the Arsenal side in their ongoing Premier League clash with north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium.
